April 9 Update

April 9, 2018
Good afternoon, Honors Choir Families –

I hope your week is off to a wonderful start!

·         Thank you for helping to make the trip to Kansas City on Friday a success! There were many great opportunities for students to learn and collaborate with one another, as well as musicians from Jefferson Middle School, Battle High School, and the University of Missouri – Kansas City Music Conservatory.
·         Tomorrow, TUESDAY, APRIL 10 will be the final concert of the 2017-2018 CPS 5th Grade Honors Choir schedule. The performance will be at Battle High School. Call time for singers is 6:15pm, and the performance will begin at 7:00.
·         Singers should wear solid black from waist to toe with their burgundy cardigan and gold clip-on tie. Following the concert, directors and elementary music teachers will be waiting in the wings to take ties and cardigans from students. If students still have Honors Choir materials (folders, music, etc.) they are expected to return them the evening of the performance.
·         It has been my honor and pleasure to serve the CPS 5th Grade Honors Choir as business manager this year. Thank you all for your kind words and support, as well as your commitment to the musical activities in your child’s educational career. I look forward to hearing of their musical achievements in years to come.

Have a great week!

April 6th trip to Kansas City is a GO!

April 5, 2018

Good evening, Honors Choir Families –

Thank you all for your patience and support in awaiting the official word whether or not we will be taking the Honors Choir to Kansas City tomorrow morning due to weather concerns.

We are moving forward with the original plan for the Honors Choir trip tomorrow. If you are at all uncomfortable with the potential weather, you are more than welcome to have your child attend their home school for the day rather than going on the trip. The team of directors will continue to monitor the weather. While it will not be ideal, we don’t believe that it will be hazardous in a way that would keep us from participating in the day. If the weather situation changes throughout the day in an unfavorable way, we would make a determination to come home early.

Please notify me if you decide to send your child to their home school rather than on the trip to Kansas City tomorrow. Otherwise, we look forward to seeing your singer tomorrow morning in the West Middle School cafeteria at 8:40am.

I will have my personal cell phone on during the day in case of emergencies. Through the course of the activities of the day, it may be easier to text rather than call; however, you can also leave a voice mail and I will return your call as soon as possible. That number is (573)239-6408.

Thank you tremendously for your support of this ensemble and your child’s musical learning experiences this year.

Have a great night!

Honors Choir to Kansas City THIS FRIDAY, APRIL 6

April 2, 2018
Hello, Honors Choir Families!

I hope you had a wonderful Spring Break. Our team of Honors Choir directors and elementary music specialists are so excited to take the ensemble to Kansas City THIS Friday, April 6th! If your singer will not be attending with us, please notify me as soon as possible.

Here are details about our trip:

·     THIS Friday, April 6th, please drop off your singer at West Middle School. We will gather together in the cafeteria on the northeast side of the building (near the intersection of Clinkscales and Worley) at 8:40am. Our goal is to depart by 8:55. THERE ARE NO BUSES BRINGING STUDENTS FROM THEIR HOME SCHOOLS TO WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL. PLEASE MAKE TRANSPORTATION ARRANGEMENTS.

·        Lunch and dinner will be provided for all singers.

·        If your singer has any dietary restrictions or food allergies, please notify me as soon as possible.

·        If your singer will need to take medication between 8:40am and 11:00pm, please notify me as soon as possible.

·        Dress code for the day will be black from waist to toe and either an Honors Choir t-shirt or a school shirt. Additionally, students will need to pack a white collared shirt along with their burgundy cardigan and gold tie for the evening concert.

·        We recommend students bring a drawstring backpack to carry their belongings. Please limit what items students bring, as we cannot be responsible for lost items.

·        We will return to West Middle School at or around 10:40pm. Plan to arrive at West Middle School slightly earlier so dismissal will go smoothly. If your contact number has changed since the beginning of the school year, please notify. We will encourage students to call/text as we approach Columbia from Kansas City.

·        If you are traveling to Kansas City to watch the evening concert, it is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm. Please check in with me before the concert between 6:15 and 6:45 to confirm you are there and that you will provide return transportation for your singer.

·        I have attached the permission form for the trip to Kansas City. All students participating in the trip to Kansas City must have a completed, signed permission form on file. You may either fill the form out and send it back electronically, or you may print it off and send it with your student to Honors Choir rehearsal tomorrow, Tuesday, April 3. If you have not received confirmation about your child's permission forms, please notify me.

·        Below is our itinerary for the day. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

Thank you for your support of the Honors Choir throughout this year! We look forward to a great day in Kansas City!

Have a great week!

March 13 Update

March 13, 2018
Hello, Honors Choir Families!

I hope all is well with you and your family. I know the time change last week has affected my energy level – thank goodness for coffee!

A few reminders:

  • In addition to today’s rehearsal, we have only 2 more rehearsals for the year! I have attached the Honors Choir schedule as a reminder of our upcoming rehearsals and events.
  • Please send your singer to rehearsal unless they are ill. We realize that flu season is not quite over, and that students get sick. Thank you for keeping your singer home from rehearsal if he/she is ill. It is also important that singers be present for rehearsal as we prepare to take the ensemble to Kansas City to perform. Last week we were missing 25 singers, which makes it difficult to rehearse as a full group. Thank you for your support.
  • Many of you have had questions about the upcoming trip to Kansas City on Friday, April 6.
    • The concert in Kansas City will be held at 7:00pm at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in downtown KC. For more information, please visit their website at https://kcgolddome.org/.
    • The concert is free of charge and open to the public. Thank you in advance for having a discussion with your singer about behavior expectations when performing in a historic sacred space. The team of directors will reinforce this message.
    • At this time, we have 4-5 elementary music specialists who have committed to join us on the trip. We do not need additional chaperones; however, we appreciate your willingness to give generously of your time, and I will let you know if our chaperone situation changes.
    • Students may bring small electronics for the bus ride to and from Kansas City with the understanding that they should be used responsibly and appropriately. We cannot be responsible for lost items.
    • Students do not need to bring any extra money. Lunch and dinner will be provided for them. If they would like to pack a small snack to have at an appropriate time during the day, you may pack one with them.
    • If you will be providing return transportation for your student, please complete and return the attached release form.
    • If your student is unable to join us on this trip, please notify me as soon as possible.
  • If your singer will be late, absent, or need to leave early from any Honors Choir function or event, please notify me as soon as possible.
  • Thank you for your continued support of the ensemble. The team of directors is very much looking forward to taking this performing group to Kansas City to perform!
  • This and all information sent to the distribution list can always be found on our blog: http://cps5honorschoir.blogspot.com/

April 6: Honors Choir to Kansas City: Trip Information

March 7, 2018
Hello, Honors Choir Families!

I hope all of you are doing well as the seasons turn from winter to spring. We’re not quite out of flu season, so I hope you’re all staying well!
