Honors Choir Update: January 17

January 17, 2022

Hello, CPS 5th Grade Honors Choir Families –

I hope all is well with you, and that you’ve had the opportunity to spend this long weekend with loved ones.

Due to the current wave of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 and the Columbia Public Schools administrative decision to adjust the school calendar, the Honors Choir team of directors has decided to take a short break from Honors Choir rehearsals. While we plan to resume Honors Choir rehearsals on February 1st, this may be extended as we closely monitor the current surge of positive cases. Out of an abundance of caution and concern for the health and safety of Honors Choir singers, we believe that we should step back from rehearsing for a short while.

We do not anticipate this pause will last for the remainder of the school year. I will update the Honors Choir mailing list as well as our blog (http://cps5honorschoir.blogspot.com/) as new information becomes available.

As always, please contact me directly with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your support, and we look forward to resuming rehearsal on February 1.

Honors Choir Update: December 15

December 15, 2021

Greetings, CPS 5th Grade Honors Choir Families!

I hope all is well with you as Winter Break approaches.

 A few announcements and reminders:

·       If possible, please notify me in advance if your singer will be absent from rehearsal. It is our hope that all students who auditioned into the group will continue to participate; however, if conflicts have arisen, please let me know.

·       I will be communicating with the elementary music teachers all over the district as an additional support to communication to Honors Choir families; however, please notify me directly with your questions or concerns.

·       Weekly rehearsals are from 4:00-5:15pm. Please do not drop off your singers before 3:45pm, as all of the Honors Choir directors are coming from different schools around the district and will not be available to supervise before then. Please pick up your singer no later than 5:30pm each week.

·       Our goal is to streamline the dismissal process as much as possible. You may either go through the pick-up line or park your vehicle and walk up to the choir room entrance to meet your singer. Additional parking is available at the Activity & Recreation Center (ARC) to the south of the WMS parking lot.

·       For safety purposes, please let me know if your singer will be riding with anyone other than their parent or guardian.

·       Our April performance date has been pushed back by a week due to a conflict with a CPS-sponsored trip affecting about half of the Honors Choir singers. Our new performance date is Tuesday, April 26.

·       All communications sent to the mailing list are also available on our blog: http://cps5honorschoir.blogspot.com/

We look forward to seeing the 2021-22 Honors Choir again on January 11 at 4:00pm in the West Middle School Choir Room.

Happy Holidays from the Honors Choir team of directors!

Honors Choir Update: December 8, 2021

December 8, 2021

Greetings, CPS 5th Grade Honors Choir Families!

What a wonderful first rehearsal we had yesterday! Mr. Walker, Mrs. Buzbee, and I were thrilled to see so many singers and families at the brief meeting following rehearsal.

A few announcements and reminders:

·       If your singer was absent from rehearsal yesterday and you have not already contacted me directly, please do so as soon as possible. It is our hope that all students who auditioned in to the group will continue to participate; however, if conflicts have arisen, please let me know.

·       I will be communicating with the music teachers in the elementary schools all over the district as an additional support to communication to Honors Choir families; however, please notify me directly with your questions or concerns.

·       Many of you noticed and commented on the limited parking available at West Middle School. For next week’s dismissal, we want to streamline the process as much as possible. You may either go through the pick-up line, or park your vehicle and walk up to the choir room entrance to meet your singer. Additional parking is available at the Activity & Recreation Center (ARC) to the south of the WMS parking lot.

·       For safety purposes, please let me know if your singer will be riding with anyone other than their parent or guardian.

·       Weekly rehearsals are from 4:00-5:15pm. Please do not drop off your singers before 3:45pm, as all of the Honors Choir directors are coming from different schools around the district and will not be available to supervise before then. Please pick up your singer no later than 5:30pm each week.

·       Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly with your questions and concerns.

We look forward to seeing the 2021-22 Honors Choir again next Tuesday, December 14 at 4:00pm in the West Middle School Choir Room.

Have a great week!

Welcome to the 2021-22 CPS 5th Grade Honors Choir!

12/7/21

Dear Honors Choir Families:

Congratulations and welcome to the Columbia Public Schools Fifth Grade Honors Choir! We are looking forward to meeting your singer(s) TODAY, December 7th at the West Middle School Choir Room (401 Clinkscales Rd. Columbia, Missouri 65203).

Following our first rehearsal, there will be a mandatory parent/guardian informational meeting in the West Middle School Band Room 5:15-5:30pm. The band room is adjacent to the choir room. The exterior doors to the band room will be open at 5:00pm and students will be led from the choir room via an indoor hallway to the band room where they will be released to a parent/guardian. Per Columbia Public Schools policy, masks are required inside all buildings district-wide, including West Middle School. If you arrive without a mask, one will be provided for you.

The following documents are attached to this email:

·     Map to the West Middle School Choir Room

·     2021-22 Columbia Public Schools 5th Grade Honors Choir Calendar

February 25 Update

February 25, 2020
Good afternoon, Honors Choir Families!

Apologies for getting the update out later than normal today. Lots of information below:
  • On Friday, April 3, 2020, the CPS 5th Grade Honors Choir will travel to Kansas City for a day filled with artistic experiences. Please see the attached itinerary for details of our day. Students should wear either an Honors Choir t-shirt or a t-shirt from their home school and comfortable walking shoes. We recommend students carry a drawstring bag with their concert clothes inside. Lunch and dinner will be provided free of cost for all Honors Choir singers.
  • There will be no morning transportation from students’ home schools to West Middle School. Please make travel arrangements to have your Honors Choir singer at the West Middle School cafeteria (closest to Clinkscales Rd.) at 8:40am on Friday, April 3.
  • The evening collaborative concert will be in downtown KC at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. This concert is free and open to the public, and will begin at 7:00pm. Groups from West Middle School and Battle High School will also be performing that evening.
  • If you would like to attend the concert in KC and transport your child from the concert, please contact me directly for the appropriate forms.
  • Hard copies of permission forms will be sent home following next week’s rehearsal.

  • The next MET Opera Simulcast will be on Saturday, March 14. The opera will be Richard Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman. More details and sign-up link coming soon!
  • Attendance to Honors Choir rehearsal is vital for the musical success of the ensemble. Thank you for keeping home from rehearsal any singers who are sick, as we do not want to spread illness. Per our handbook policies, when a student is absent 3 times in a semester, their participation eligibility is discussed by the team of directors. Thank you for upholding your commitment to our group and scheduling appointments and trips around rehearsal, when possible.
  • T-shirt update: we are sold out of size Adult Small. Other sizes are still available while supplies last. If you would like to purchase a t-shirt, please send $10 cash or check (made payable to Columbia Public Schools) to rehearsal with your singer. You may also send checks only to the home school music teacher and email me what size your child would like.
  • For weekly rehearsals, students should arrive to West Middle School no earlier than 3:45pm. The team of directors come from different directions all over town and cannot guarantee your child will be supervised until 3:45 each week. Singers should be picked up from WMS no later than 5:20pm following weekly rehearsals. Students who are consistently picked up late may not be eligible to continue membership in the ensemble. Thank you for respecting the evening commitments of the team of directors.
  • If your student will be absent from any Honors Choir rehearsal or event, please email me as soon as possible.
  • All communications sent to the distribution list are also available on our blog: http://cps5honorschoir.blogspot.com/
  • If you have any questions or concerns, please email me directly.

Have a great week!
